This book presents contributions from research microbiologists,
most of whom gathered at a conference with the same title in
Cardiff, Wales in 1992. The book illustrates the special power
of flow cytometry and describes the problems and benefits of
extending this technique to the microbial world. It begins with
an introduction and overview by the editor and the following chapters
cover a range of diverse problems to which flow cytometry has been
applied. Methods for the measurement of size and viability of
bacteria and yeasts in laboratory cultures are complemented by
"real-world" analyses of algae and even the use of a ship-board
flow cytometer. Neural networks analysis of flow cytometric data
is also described. This book is a must for the growing number
of microbiologists who are discovering the benefits of flow cytometry.
