paraformaldehyde question

i learned this once a long time ago--and i know there's been discussion on
the flownet about it. could someone tell me, in sufficient detail to
convince my colleagues, when is the fixative appropriately called
paraformadehyde, formalin, or formaldehyde and the chemical nuances among
these? i will put the correct responses on my refrigerator so to never
forget again.
