I would like to request something of those who give information and then
refer to a published paper for further elaboration. Please provide at least
the initial of the first name (preferentially also the initial of the middle
name) of the author whose last name you give. Those of us who try to
follow up on these leads by searching in Medline for the abstracts are in
for a major inconvenience if we don't have an author's initial(s), in
particular if we want to attempt the quick and easy method of combining
the author's name with the name of the journal. For example, today when
I wished to find the abstracts to three papers mentioned by two
contributors to Cytometry e-mail, I was required to select 12 authors
with the name Goodell, 140 authors with the name Chiu, and 229 authors
with the name Nguyen.

Obviously, this is a pain in the butt, especially since the labor could have
easily been avoided if the contributors had merely been thoughtful enough to
provide one or two more letters in the reference they mentioned. Those of
us who regularly read the Cytometry e-mail appreciate it when contributors
make reference to salient published articles; we would be even more
appreciative if the references were made simpler to find on Medline.
