The yeast viability kit does work for bacteria but the staining is
very dim. The better choice for staining bacteria would be any of
the following kits available from Molecular Probes:

LIVE/DEAD BacLight Bacterial Viability Kit
ViaGram Red+ Bacterial Gram Stain and Viability Kit
Live BacLight Bacterial Gram Stain Kit
Bacteria Counting Kit
