The candidate of choice will direct and partake in the design and
implementation of database client/server systems according to the
requirements of the Small Molecules Chemistry group that will access
data stored in chemical structure databases and SQL relational
databases. These database systems will handle and report on all aspects
of the work including reagent tracking, planning and coordination of
combinatorial chemistry syntheses, coordinating high throughput
screening and tracking the results, quality control results, interaction
with lab automation, exchange of information with molecular modeling
programs etc. The candidate must have a BS in Computer Science or the
equivalent. Candidate must have 4 to 8 years in
computer progamming and analysis, 4 years working with relational
databases, 2 years experience in software project managment, and 3 years
experience directly supervising staff. A Ph.D in Organic Chemistry,
Biochemistry or equivalent is preferred.

Job Description:
Job Description: BS level EET, EE or ME (or equivalent background) with
at least 1-2 years of
job experience in the troubleshooting, programming and Personal Computer
interfacing of
electromechanical systems. Knowledge of basic electronic theory, design
as well as computer
programming. This person will provide engineering expertise in the
development, modification
and interfacing of new laboratory automation. Good communication skills
are desired.
Responsibilities: Programming of Personal Computer based, laboratory
automation and robots.
This may require assimilation of pre-existing vendor-written code prior
to making modifications
or the writing of the initial code for a system. Programming will be for
the purpose of system
control, movement, data acquisition, data transfer and data processing.
Modification of existing
equipment/instrumentation to facilitate the use within a fully automated
system. This may involve
the evaluation of any existing I/O capability, electronic or mechanical
modifications and the
addition or modification of control/interfacing hardware; Attending
vendor training courses to
gather expertise on the programming, electro/mechanical and control
features of custom
automated systems. This is in preparation for implementing anticipated
system modifications
(hardware or software) and providing high level system support;
Providing engineering
expertise in the evaluation of new equipment and the development of
contracts with vendors.
Staying abreast of automation technology as it may apply to the
laboratory. Performing or
coordinating with vendors maintenance or troubleshooting of specialized
automated systems.
Interacting with the laboratory staff to understand and define problems.
This role includes
suggestion and/or implementation of design improvements; Training
laboratory staff in the use
and basic troubleshooting of custom laboratory automation; This includes
working with others in
the group to develop a training program; Management of the documentation
of specialized
laboratory automation systems; Basic machining and component
fabrication. Minimum
Requirements: BS degree in EET, EE, ME or related field, plus at least 2
years of employment
applying this education. Experience in PC programming (C, Pascal, Basic
or Fortran) for the
purposes of instrument control and interfacing. Knowledge of basic
electronic design and
theory. Good communication skills (written and verbal). The ability to
work in a team
environment. Optional skills: molecular/cell biology, high through put
screening, and chemistry.
