David Abbott asks about upgrading an HP 9000/310 to an HP 9000/340 for his
FACScan. According to the latest (Summer 1993) HP DIRECT catalog, HP does
not offer *any* of the 9000/3xx workstations anymore. However, they do offer
an upgrade for the 310 (no upgrades for the 340). The 310 upgrade would give
you a faster CPU (68040/25) than the 340, the same (15" 640x480) video or
better (1024x768) video than the 340, for the low, low starting price of
6,830 (US$). Call 800-637-7740 for more info. Of course, LYSYS II (or Consort
30) may not work on an upgraded 310.
As Eric Martz points out, Cicero is a proven option. Getting Cicero for the
EPICS and the FACS would give you a common acquisition and analysis
interface to both machines. And with PC-clones you could run all the current
software from BD, Coulter, Cytomation, Verity, and Phoenix (others?).
Some "common knowledge" about Macintoshes... FAPC (?) and Phoenix software
already run on the Mac (and it stands to reason that others will follow). Of
course, this is just analysis software. Macs that Apple plans to support are
the Centris 650, Quadra 800, and Quadra 950 (at least as of July; I'm not
sure about the 660av or 840av). By "support", I mean "offer an upgrade to
PowerPC". PowerPC's won't be available untill 1st quarter '94 (last I heard),
but they promise to be more, well, powerful (don't they all). At the very
least, I heard a rumor that PowerPC will emulate today's Macintoshes in terms
of speed (when running today's Mac applications).

Getting back to the subject...we've noticed improved performance of our 340
with a newer Bering hard drive versus the HP 9153C when running Consort 32/
LYSYS II.
