MoFlo Specialist

Oversee operations of sperm sorting systems using flow cytometry without supervision, including some maintenance and repair. Capable of all aspects of setup of sorters, calibration, including alignment.  Sorting, purity analysis and responsible for minimal troubleshooting and repair without supervision.  Additional MoFlo responsibilities to include assisting management in the creation of procedures and documentation relating to the operation of the MoFlo Sperm sorters. Additional responsibility to oversee operation of MoFlo to include compressors, vacuum systems, lasers, and any component related to the sorters.  Assist laboratory with any technical issue that may arise relating to water systems, laboratory equipment and assistance with other tasks as recommended by the laboratory manager. 

 

Basic Job Function

·      Perform tasks associated with daily operations of SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Specie Preservation Laboratory including, but not limited to, sperm analysis, sperm processing, and cryopreservation, making media and extender, washing and sterilizing laboratory glassware, hormone analysis. 

 

·      Enthusiastically represents SeaWorld by displaying a positive attitude, maintaining a high level of energy and commitment to quality throughout all aspects of the job.


Principle Duties

  • Follows laboratory procedures according to federal, state and local regulations.
  • Follows engineering and work practice controls for laboratory workers.
  • Operates flow cytometers for sperm sorting. 
  • Computes and prepares test results. 
  • Maintains records and enters data into computer. 
  • Conducts hormone analysis for clinical diagnostics and research projects.
  • Prepares and processes samples and maintains records for animal care and research projects.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Assists and participates in animal care projects as needed.
  • Ensures excellent animal care service by responding to team's requirements, expectations and needs.

·      Other related duties as assigned. 

 

Required Skills, Knowledge, Education, and Training

·      Must be at least 18 years old.

·      Must have Bachelor of Science degree in a related field.

·      Must have working knowledge of laboratory instrumentation.

·      Must be able to prepare laboratory reports.

·      Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.

·      Must have basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft applications, spreadsheets and databases.

·      Must be able to sit, walk, talk, use hands, hear, smell and have color vision.

·      Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time.

·      Must be able to handle multiple tasks at once and work in a fast paced work environment.

·      Must be able to work indoors with several large and small laboratory instruments as well as refrigeration and freezer units which create moderate noise.

·      Must be able to work with limited exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and radiation. Protective equipment is provided when necessary.

·      Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.

·      Must be able to positively interact with park guests and co-workers of all ages, different ethnic/cultural backgrounds and/or language, and individuals with special needs.

·      Experience in a reproductive biology laboratory or veterinary setting preferred. 

 

Hours and Availability

·      Must have 5 days of unrestricted availability to include weekends and holidays.

·      Typical work shift is eight hours start time may vary based on need.

·      Occasional overnight shift may be required.

·      40 hours per week.
