The newly combined Emory Pediatrics and Winship Flow Cytometry Core (Emory Advanced Cytometry Core) is looking for a person to fill the position of Research Specialist, Lead. This is a great opportunity to join a very busy core laboratory. In the past six months the core has invested over $1.2 million dollars in state-of-the-art equipment to meet its research goals including a new 5-laser Aurora.  More information about the core can be found on its website here: https://pedsresearch.org/research/cores/flow-cytometry-core/overview/.  We are looking for an enthusiastic and pro-active person to fulfil our current needs in assisting in the day to day running of the Pediatrics Flow Cytometry Core Facility.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Works under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
  • Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques. May assist in protocol design.
  • Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.
  • Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.
  • Analyzes and interprets results of studies. Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.
  • Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.
  • Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.
  • Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • Provide Cell Sorting Services.
  • Provides routine maintenance of instruments, including daily startup and QC.
  • Serves as a key resource in technical and scientific areas related to scientific consulting services, including experimental design, sample preparation, and protocol development for a diverse array of users from multiple disciplines, including immunology, oncology, biochemistry, hematology, and pathology.
  • Set-up and validate multi-color panels (up to 28).
  • Train users in the running of all flow analyzers and other core related instruments.
  • Documents all training, instrument breakdowns and repairs.
  • Liaise with service support personnel when required.
  • Monitoring and Ordering of supplies as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience with flow cytometers and cell sorters is strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of immunology is desired, especially bead and cell-based assays.
