DESCRIPTION

BioMarin is the world leader in delivering therapeutics that provide meaningful advances to patients who live with serious and life-threatening rare genetic diseases. We target diseases that lack effective therapies and affect relatively small numbers of patients, many of whom are children. These conditions are often inherited, difficult to diagnose, progressively debilitating and have few, if any, treatment options. BioMarin will continue to focus on advancing therapies that are the first or best of their kind.

BioMarin’s World Wide Research & Development group (WWRD) is responsible for everything from research and discovery to post-market clinical development. WWRD involves all bench and clinical research and the associated groups that support those endeavors. Our teams work on developing first-in-class and best-in-class therapeutics that provide meaningful advances to patients who live with rare diseases.

The BioMarin Center of Technology (CoTe) is a new, centralized laboratory whose mission is to promote open and shared access to state-of-the-art flow cytometry and mass spectrometry technologies, as well as procurement of rare, research biospecimens to effectively support our early discovery pipeline and our cutting-edge clinical trials. The Flow Cytometry Core is a resource for collaboration and provides access to instrumentation, training, and experimental assistance to our colleagues across all of WWRD.  Come join our team and make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives.

 SUMMARY

BioMarin is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Associate I or Senior Research Associate II to join the Flow Cytometry Core within our Center of Technology (CoTe).  This position will work alongside the Flow Cytometry Core Lead Scientist and actively work in partnership with other members of the Genetics Discovery and Delivery, Biology Research, Translational Sciences, and Clinical Sciences groups to maximize access and impact of state-of-the-art flow cytometry technologies to answer key scientific questions for candidate therapies in our pipeline.  A strong applicant will be a person who actively seeks feedback, looks for opportunities to make an impact, and has a philosophy of perpetual improvement.  A successful candidate will be expected to build collaborative relationships with a diverse range of internal scientific teams ranging from existing experts in cytometry to new researchers learning flow cytometry to physicians and scientists that do not have laboratories or expertise with flow cytometry.

 RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Partnering with the Lead Scientist to run a Shared Resource Lab facility, including running experiments for diverse clients across Research and Early Development (RED)
  • Work with RED scientists to enable them to execute experiments utilizing flow cytometry and cell sorting
  • Assist Lead Scientist to operate and maintain existing cytometry analysis and sorting equipment, computer systems, and ancillary equipment
  • Assist in the training of new users, especially practical machine training and continued learning for scientists new to the technology. Provide advice and answer basic questions about flow cytometry technology and experimental design
  • Set up, troubleshoot, and execute flow cytometry, cell culture, and primary cell isolation experiments with minimal supervision. Analyze flow cytometry and experimental data independently
  • Thoroughly document procedures and results; present results in group meetings and to internal collaborators
  • Contribute to original peer-reviewed publications
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 4+ years lab-based experience in flow cytometry. Experience in a core facility preferred
  • Individual must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills to build trusting relationships with diverse users with a wide range of expertise. Ability to communicate effectively, give oral presentations, and write reports
  • Experience operating and maintaining Cytometry Analyzers and Cell Sorters
  • Experience with multi-parameter fluorophore experiments including flow cytometry panel design, fluorescence compensation and data analysis in FlowJo or similar software
  • Experience with Biosafety Level 2 cell culture of human cell lines and primary cells
  • Collaborative skills and experience working in a cross-functional environment
  • Flexibility, willingness to accept new responsibilities and project ownership
  • Handle and prioritize multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Be diligent, detail-oriented, and highly organized
  • Interact with team members in a constructive and proactive manner

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a background in neurobiology, neuroimmunology or tissue immunology including preparation of live cells from tissue for cytometry or cell sorting
  • Experience with single cell RNA-Seq, Genomics or Multi-omics
  • Experience working in a GxP environment
  • Certification as a Specialist in Cytometry (SCYM) by the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC)

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Senior Research Associate I:

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology or related field, with 6+ years industry/academic experience; Master’s degree with 4+ years of relevant experience.

Senior Research Associate II:

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology or related field, with 8+ years industry/academic experience; Master’s degree with 6+ years of relevant experience.
