Primary objective

As a member of the haematology unit of the Clinical Laboratory work team, positively contribute to the provision of a timely, efficient, cost effective and high quality service to the Department of Health and public of the Northern Territory.

Context statement

The scope of flow cytometry assays performed in our Darwin laboratory includes TBNK immunophenotyping, HLA-B27 testing, feto-maternal haemorrhage screening and quantitation, as well as leukaemia/lymphoma immunophenotyping. This role is suitable for a flow cytometry scientist who is able to work independently and has experience in haematology/oncology flow cytometry. Limited molecular assays are performed by this role.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.                                                                                                          
2. Perform routine and complex specimen analysis using a wide range of technical and scientific skills in order to provide diagnostic pathology reports.
3. Recognise anomalous results, errors and analytical or technical problems and implement corrective action and/or escalate as appropriate.
4. Maintain up to date competency and understanding of a range of clinical conditions.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Work Experience: At least two years’ experience in clinical flow cytometry with a practice scope equivalent to or wider than that for Territory Pathology.
2. Education and Qualifications: A degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
3. Capabilities, Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrated competency and in-depth knowledge of clinical flow cytometry in haematology. Demonstrated skills in sample preparation, instrument maintenance and optimisation, quality control, compensation, gating strategies, trouble shooting and reporting.
4. Personal Qualities: Demonstrated ability to work independently and demonstration of high-level personal organisational skills to ensure timely, cost-effective and efficient delivery of results.

Desirable

1. Experience with staff training and supervision.
2. Knowledge and experience with PCR techniques.
