General Information & Purpose of the Society

In 1973, the Engineering Foundation began to sponsor a series of conferences to explore the utility of the new field of flow cytometry in biomedical research. At the 1978 Engineering Foundation Conference on Automated Cytology held in Schloss Elmau, Bavaria, West Germany, those present felt that there was enough interest in the field (there were over two hundred attendees at the conference) to form a new society, called the Society for Analytical Cytology. In 1991, with 1500 members enrolled, the Society changed its name to the International Society for Analytical Cytology (ISAC) to reflect the international character of the Society.

The Society is a scientific and educational organization whose purpose is:
1. To promote research, development, and applications in analytical cytology. Analytical cytology is broadly defined as the characterization and measurement of cells and cellular constituents for biological, experimental, and therapeutic purposes. It embraces components of cytochemistry, cytophysics, anatomy, biology, physiology, pathology, image analysis, instrumentation, clinical laboratory practice, and other subjects of relevance.
2. To facilitate integration of the many disciplines with analytical cytology.
3. To disseminate knowledge of analytical cytology.
4. To provide information and advice on those aspects of public policy which are concerned with analytical cytology.

Membership Requirements

Membership in the Society is open to all persons who share the stated purposes of the Society and who have educational, research or practical experience in some aspect of analytical cytology. The Society has a student membership category available to persons enrolled in a degree program at an accredited school.

A candidate for membership must be sponsored by two members in good standing or may request direct sponsorship from the Council based on the information that the candidate provides in the application. A membership application can be printed and submitted by mail or fax.

Divisions

The Clinical Cytometry Division of the International Society for Analytical Cytology was formed in March of 1993 to bring together those members of the Society who are interested in promoting the use of flow and image cytometry in clinical research and medicine. Membership in this Division is optional and requires a separate application. Contact the Society Office for details.

Congress

The Society holds an International Congress approximately every two years, moving among sites in the eastern and western US and in Europe. The Congress is a six day meeting with industrial and scientific tutorials, plenary, parallel and poster sessions, and workshops. The Society has met 12 times since its organization:

July 1978 Schloss Elmau, Germany November 1979 Asilomar, California May 1981 Wentworth, New Hampshire October 1982 Schloss Elmau, Germany June 1984 Asilomar, California November 1985 Hilton Head, South Carolina August 1987 Cambridge, England September 1988 Breckenridge, Colorado March 1990 Asheville, North Carolina August 1991 Bergen, Norway March 1993 Colorado Springs, Colorado October, 1994 Lake Placid, New York

Activities

The Society sponsors several activities. One of these is the Specialty Training and Education Program (STEP) through which the Society helps its members obtain "on the job" training in a specific field of cytometry. The Society identifies laboratories capable and willing to participate in the project, assesses the quality of training provided, and makes the information available to its members.

Another project undertaken by the Society is to assist scientists in developing and transition economy countries in becoming members of ISAC, attending congresses, and in receiving specialized training. The Society also maintains a "Fund in Support of Developing and Transition Economy Countries".

The Membership Services Committee maintains a zero interest loan fund to provide start-up funds for member groups to organize specialty meetings such as consensus workshops. This Committee also provides support for students to attend the Society's Congress.

For further information on any of these activities, please contact the Society Office.

The Society's next meeting will be in Rimini, Italy in April of 1996, followed by congresses in Colorado Springs, USA in 1998 and in Montpellier, France in the year 2000.

Publications

The Society's journal, Cytometry, is published monthly by Wiley-Liss. In 1994, the Society issued a new section of the journal, Communications in Clinical Cytometry, and this year it will produce the first issue of Current Protocols in Cytometry.
