At my last place we had two FACScans on a common supply line. One of them
would often register intermittent spurious packets of 20 events,
generally they were "frame shifts" where the data for say FL1 would be
received as FSC, and the data for FL2 would be received as SSC. The
problem went away when I uncoiled some of the cable between the machine
and the computer. We used FACScan research software.
In this instance it was clear that there was an electronic problem with
the system, and that the problem wasn't caused by fluidic/supply noise
since we would get cd4/cd8 patterns appearing on the FSC/SSC
dotplot. Since it cleared up with the cable rearrangement I presume that
it was a communication problem (not enough error-checking, another answer
could have been that the ADC was getting out of phase with the I/O in the
machine.
