Reply to John's question about usenet.

The cytometry discussions are available on the web for anyone who
wants to use that medium. If you link into our web page (below) you
will see the link to the Cytometry Mail. The Purdue group have no
plans to extend it further - it seems to work well, there is a very
high participation rate, the noise level is reasonable - it seems to
be working, and for those who just want the information to appear on
their email- this is the best way. We have had a number of people
who have asked to be taken of the distribution list and they use the
web. Other reasons we don't use the "usenet" are the potential (now
very real) abuse by commercial companies sending out literally
hundreds of adverts, and trash mail. Our group is perhaps more
conservative, but we try to keep the trash down.

If the group felt strongly that we should abandon this group we would
not complain if someone else wanted to take over the responsibility
and do this as a usenet. I am not so sure I personally, would be
bothered to check it out, and I think that the "impulse" response
reply rate, which is presently very high would be lost.

The very hardest thing about the present explosion of electronic
communication is keeping the trash at a manageable level. It is going
to get worse! I monitor only one other group routinely related to
confocal microscopy - and I have many times seriously considered
dropping it as so many of the messages are personal messages sent to
the entire group because people constantly hit the "rely" key and
the message goes out to the whole world. On
average 5-10 messages a day could be of this nature - further, there
are many very inapproprate message which come over, usually
accidently!

We are open to discussion.

Regards
Paul
