NIAID/DAIDS HIV WORKSHOP: This year's NIAID/DAIDS sponsored HIV
workshop will review and discuss the development and use of acceptable
quality control measures for HIV immunophenotyping. The members of
the ACTG Flow Cytometry Operators Focus Group will illustrate how
various aspects of an established quality control program can be used
to detect, troubleshoot, and find solutions for the everyday problems
facing flow operators. Quality control issues in several areas
including methods and procedures, instrumentation set-up, data
analysis, gating strategies, hematology, and "whole blood" control
products will be presented. The audience will be invited to discuss
and compare current quality control practices used in their
laboratories with various published guidelines. The goals for the
workshop are to serve as a practical troubleshooting guide for the
NIAIDS sponsored laboratories and to provoke further discussion on
practical issues encountered by laboratory personnel performing HIV
immunophenotyping.

THIRD ANNUAL CLINICAL FLOW CYTOMETRY COURSE: August 17, 18, and 19,
1997 - The Clinical Cytometry Society is sponsoring the third annual
Clinical Cytometry Course. This course will offer an intensive review
of the most common clinical applications of flow cytometry with an
emphasis on data analysis and interpretation. Image analysis will be
incorporated where appropriate. Topics include diagnosis of acute
leukemia and lymphoproliferative disorders, prognostic markers in
hematopoietic neoplasms, molecular markers of neoplasia, detection of
apoptosis, stem cell enumeration, minimal residual disease detection,
monitoring of immune recovery following bone marrow transplantation,
and cell cycle evaluation of solid tumors. Course material will be
covered in lectures and hands on manipulations of actual patient data.
Class sizes will be kept small (8-15 students) to allow close
interaction with faculty members for an optimal learning experience.
A comprehensive course syllabus will be provided. The course is
appropriate for pathologists and medical technologists with experience
in the field of flow cytometry as well as hematologists and
oncologists utilizing flow cytometric data in diagnosis and patient
management. Classes will be grouped according to experience.
