The Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center (CBC) provides a state-of-the-art research infrastructure to investigators. Our portfolio includes core research facilities supporting genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, flow cytometry, microscopy-to-omics, and bioinformatics.

 

CBC has an opening for a Flow Cytometry Research Specialist to support the activities of Cytometry and Microscopy to Omics in the CBC CMtO Facility. This includes training users, maintaining, and operating instrumentation, performing cell sorting and analysis on cytometry systems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assist and Support Research Activities of CMtO Users:

·       Managing and running all aspects of flow cytometry instrumentation (primarily BD Biosciences analyzers (Symphony A1, LSRs and Fortessa), BD FACS Aria II and BigFoot Sorters) to Perform cell sorts and analysis using multiple protocols.

·       Training users on both “practical” and “theoretical” flow cytometry and data analysis

·       Assist with CMtO user schedule for main and satellite facilities.

·       Cross trained to support sample preparation for microscopy to support Microscopy to Omics protocols in the facility.

·       Actively assist researchers on applying the facilities instrumentation to their research application

·       Perform as a CMtO team member work cordially with CMtO staff and Director, willing to learn and train on all facility instruments and protocols to ensure the successful operation of the facility.

·       Use software Flow Jo or FCS Express, in flow data analysis and preparing publication quality plots.

 

Maintenance of CMtO Facility, Operation and Instruments:

·       Oversee inventory of reagent, parts, and consumables to ensure uninterrupted operation of instruments.

·       Maintenance and upgrades of computer hardware and software required to analyze Flow Cytometry data.

·       Maintenance, training and troubleshooting of all major flow cytometry and microscopy to omics research instrumentation in the CMtO Facility main and satellite laboratories, monitoring data production to ensure the highest quality of data and image production.

·       Assist with data archiving and updating software for all CMtO instruments and their data acquisition

 

Administrative Support:

·       Conduct timely and accurate billing of users for CMtO services of the facility, and maintain archive support documents

·       Assist with maintaining and updating the facility webpage

·       Oversee, ensure and regularly update compliance with all Division of Research Safety and all Illinois campus safety regulations and policies.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·       B.S. biological, agricultural, or closely related life sciences field.

·       Three years of hands-on life sciences wet laboratory experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

·       M.S. degree in biological or physical sciences.

·       Hands-on experience in flow cytometry, analysis and sorting, and basic molecular biology protocols including cDNA preparation, and PCR.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Effective personal relations, working well in a team environment, and organizational skills. Ability to effectively communicate with researchers from diverse backgrounds to understand their experimental design and objectives to provide effective technical support. Demonstrated ability to effectively perform in a diverse and fast paced environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities under stringent deadlines.

 

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION:

The Flow Cytometry Research Specialist position is full time, benefits eligible. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date.
