JOB DESCRIPTION:        

The Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research (ICBR) at the University of Florida, the premier campus biotechnology shared resource center, is hiring a Cytometry Scientific Director at the level of Assistant or Associate Scientist. This non-tenure track faculty position will serve as the ICBR expert in cytometry and lead all laboratory operations in flow cytometry, cell sorting, and confocal microscopy. The Cytometry Core Scientific Director will work with the Associate Director for Science in the development, validation, and implementation of new methodologies in cytometry, and assist in the acquisition of cutting-edge instrumentation. Additional duties include establishing rigorous standard operating procedures to ensure rigor and reproducibility, implementing robust self-user training initiatives, effective budget management, and staff supervision and recruitment. The Core Director sets the priorities for the core and its staff, leads all core staff meetings, and attends the ICBR Senior Staff meetings. The successful candidate must have the ability to think independently, be an effective and collaborative leader, possess excellent problem-solving skills, and be committed to providing outstanding service to users of the Cytometry shared resource. Key leadership roles include ensuring that laboratory staff adhere to ICBR policies and guidelines, monitoring equipment self-usage by ICBR customers, and participating in ICBR strategic planning. Outstanding customer service is key to ICBR’s success, and this position requires a positive, collegial, and customer-centric attitude.

 

Serve as the ICBR expert in cell sorting, staying abreast of the latest developments in the field of cytometry and confocal microscopy. Perform the administrative duties necessary for a fee-for-service facility operation, such as data analysis and delivery, and weekly billing for services. Review and/or recommend specifications for new equipment or renovation projects. Direct marketing and strategic plans for increasing awareness of the core facility and the services provided. Work with investigators to create and improve flow protocol for cell sorting optimization. Must be skilled in the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities while still meeting deadlines.

Lead and supervise the core staff of 4 – 6 individuals and two locations. Supervisory duties include holding regular meetings to provide feedback, performing all quarterly appraisals through the UFEngaged system, reviewing and approving time, providing necessary trainings, and leading the hiring process when necessary. The Core Director sets the priorities for the core and its staff, leads all core staff meetings, and attends the ICBR Senior Staff meetings.

Provide information and recommendations to assist users in planning the course of their cytometry research.

Implement detailed laboratory policies regarding complex scientific instrument usage, technical staffing roles, and availability of laboratory services towards the general UF research community. Develop and maintain laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent quality across all staff members, and then oversee the development of any new SOPs. Train and direct all employees in carrying out the SOPs.

Lead the process for the acquisition of cutting-edge instrumentation, as well as in the development, validation, and implementation of new methodologies in cytometry, and work with Administration for obtaining support for new acquisitions.

Oversee and monitor self-user training initiatives. Ensure that all users are fully trained and provide advanced education, training, and consultation to users and staff on the highly specialized equipment, scientific research, or technology. Teach and develop the necessary training courses. Design and run Flow core workshop and training program.

Contribute to customer-led manuscripts and research proposals when invited, particularly with respect to protocol development and experimental design. Work with the Associate Director for Science on the development of  S10 proposals to expand core instrumentation. Develop new methods for sample analyses and consult with customers on project design and assay parameters.

EXPECTED SALARY:       

$87,000 – $95,000, commensurate with education and experience

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:     

PhD in Cell Biology, Immunology, Biotechnology or related discipline. Extensive experience in cytometry including 3 years experience in flow cytometry and cell sorting technologies. Three years supervisory experience in shared resource/core laboratory or relevant setting is preferred. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:   

10 years direct experience in using flow cytometry and cell sorting technologies. 5 years plus direct supervisory experience in shared resource laboratory setting. Additional experience in with confocal microscopy experience a plus. Familiarity with iLab Core Facility Management software.
